I got my custom MAC eyeshadow palette for Christmas in 2013, and it has been my most valuable makeup item ever since. By valuable I mean useful rather than financially valuable, although to be honest it’s probably the most financially valuable one too.
It’s had a few different iterations over the past few years, and at the start of the month I restored it to a full MAC palette, with a few new additions from last year’s 25% off sale on maccosmetics.com. The palette temporarily had a few Makeup Geek shadows in it, but they don’t quite fit perfectly and their texture is different, which bothered me.
So here’s how it’s currently looking. This is my primary palette for when I’m doing freelance makeup, now—I prefer to have one versatile palette that I use most of the time, and then I have my Z palette with the rest of my eyeshadows on hand if I need it. As such I have a lot of neutral matte shadows with different undertones in my custom MAC palette, and then a few shimmers and a touch of colour in there too.
First row: I think this is Vanilla but it could be Brule; Soft Brown; Swiss Chocolate; Embark; Amber Lights.
Second row: Omega; Wedge; Espresso; All That Glitters; Sumptuous Olive.
Third row: Quarry; Blackberry; Mystery; Expensive Pink; Humid.
It’s definitely lacking a cool-toned shimmer, but I never use them on myself so I struggle to get excited about buying them! I’ve also got a lot of Makeup Geek cool-toned shimmer shades, so they’re available in my other palette. There’s also no black, but I rarely use black and if I do I’ll likely use a kohl pencil. Likewise, there’s a black in my other palette too.
Blackberry is disappointingly powdery and poorly pigmented, which you can kind of see in the swatches below, but I feel like it fits in the palette the way the colours are currently set up, and I don’t know what I’d replace it with! Feel free to make suggestions!
Embark is a recent addition, and looking at the palette now, it’s probably redundant with Espresso and Mystery still in there.
I’m aware that Humid is a strange one to have on its own in the corner there, but again, it’s new and I wanted to play with it, so putting it in the palette keeps it at the front of my mind. I’m a bit sick of warm-toned eyeshadow and, with the Pantone colour of the year being green, I’m hoping green comes back into the beauty consciousness.
What are your favourite MAC eyeshadows? Leave me suggestions for replacements for Blackberry and Embark. Also let me know if you want to see a similar post with my Z-palette and Makeup Geek eyeshadows!
