FACE | Ballerina bun & Heroine FOTD

Purple lipstick is my jam. I crowned MAC Heroine as my favourite when I was interviewed for FishHead Magazine, and I think it still holds true. So rarely are purple lipsticks a) actually purple, rather than simply a purple-toned pink, and b) somehow still acceptable enough for you to wear them all day without everyone commenting on your lipstick. Don’t get me wrong, I like when people comment on my lipstick, but sometimes it’s more of an ‘oh, your lipstick is …interesting, rather than a genuine ‘I really like your lipstick’. (I’ve swatched some of my other favourite purple lipsticks further down this post.)

Second note: My hair is finally long enough to do a ballerina bun! I figured I should try the bun donut I bought, seeing as how it didn’t get used in my xoVain hair tutorial.

Here’s what’s on my face. I mean, the lash curler isn’t on my face, but I used it, and it’s pretty essential here. I wrote that I wasn’t loving the L’Oreal Miss Manga mascara a while back, and while it still isn’t my favourite, I find it is completely acceptable if I use it after curling the shit out of my lashes.

I’m using the MAC Prolongwear Paint Pot in Constructivist all over my lids, which I’ve been doing a lot lately for convenience’s sake. I guess the Maybelline Bad To The Bronze Colour Tattoo is cheaper and pretty similar if you want to save yourself some money.

My foundation is a new one: The Body Shop’s Moisture Foundation*. It has SPF 15 and, although it is meant to be a low to medium coverage, I find it does an incredible job of covering my redness and blemishes without looking heavy. It’s incredibly thin in formulation. I like it a lot. I’ll be writing a full review of it soon, but in the meantime, A+.

So like I said, in this post I’m wearing MAC lipstick in Heroine, but here are a couple of other dope purple lipsticks in my collection. I know that Heroine can be quite hard to find and also costs $40 here in New Zealand, so I thought I might be useful and share some more budget alternatives. These aren’t perfect dupes for MAC Heroine, but are definitely in the same colour family.

The first is the Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm in Shameless. These are $23 in New Zealand, but there’s almost always a deal on at Farmers. This is very matte, like Heroine, although it doesn’t wear for as long. It’s the only one of these three that doesn’t stain, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your preference. It is very purple, but I’d say it’s like a cross between Heroine and Rebel from MAC.

The second is the Australis Velour Lips in TOK-I-O. It’s even cheaper than Shameless at $15, and it is very long wearing. It’s one of those liquid lipsticks that dries in a heavy matte coat over the lips, so it’s probably not one you want to be wearing if you’re planning on eating a whole bunch. It is cheap, though, and functional enough, which is dope. I’ve tried a few other shades in the Velour Lips range and I have a new one I’m yet to really try out and write about.

The ballerina bun is still a work in progress for me, especially as I have a lot of shorter pieces of hair that definitely weren’t going to stay in the bun unless I doused my head in several coats of hairspray, which is not a thing I like doing. I kinda like the piece-y, messy look, though? I also think having all my hair up in the bun gives my fringe a chance to be a fringe without looking entirely terrible.

What is your favourite purple lipstick?

I have Heroine too and love it, but I hate how dry it feels. I wore it to uni once and almost everyone stared at me… it was slightly unnerving but kinda hilarious!

    • That’s so funny! I think Heroine is pretty wearable but then I suppose there are a lot of basic people at uni who never wear interesting makeup. I don’t find Heroine is drying at all, but I guess lipstick formulas work differently on everyone!

I’m completely obsessed with purple lipstick – I LOVE heroine, but currently writing a post on Up The Amp which i love more i think haha, I find it easier to wear, a little less BAM on my face haha.. You’re killing it though =) the eye combo is on point ! .. Also, just a side note, the tat on your inner arm looks awesome x

    • Thanks love! I think Up The Amp is too cool-toned for me, although it looks great on you!

  • Cesy

Oooh thank you for the swatches, I tried Heroine the other day but the MAC girl only did a thin coat so I was ambivalent about it, but I may try and get my hands on it in Aus- to go with my Tok-i-o which was my intro to purple lipsticks.

    • You’re welcome! It’s more wearable than Tokio so if you can handle that, you should love a good thick slick of Heroine!

  • Arrabella Bolter

Heroine ~*should*~ be on counters as part of Penciled In mini collection. Gonna try it then.
Otherwise Diva is my go to, but I appear to have lost it :, (

    • Ooh I am going to try get the Heroine pencil when it’s available!

  • Unpaletteable

None of the blogger reviews have made me consider getting Miss Manga, but paired with the purple lip and lashes up to your eyebrows, you are selling it here! And speaking as a 90s girl, no up-do is _complete_ without a bunch of wispy strands hangin round your face, neck, etc.

    • I think it’s the wand that really lets Miss Manga down. I wonder if there are other L’Oreal mascaras that have a similar formula, but a better wand?

  • I adore Heroine too! I actually just wore it yesterday. I love it on you!

    • Thanks Lexie! It’s such an iconic colour, I love it.

  • I just discovered purple lipstick and think I found a comfortable dupe! It’s a Korean lipstick from a brand called 3 Concept Eyes. http://nonsonoquitter.blogspot.com/2015/05/i-try-purple-lipstick-3-concept-eyes.html

    • Ooh nice! I haven’t tried anything from 3CE but I hear good things.

      • The lipsticks from that brand are nice. They are a bit expensive though for a Korean brand.
