WIN | One for you and one for me

Exciting news: there’s a new and exciting feature coming to Hyacinth Girl! This is something I’ve been wanting to do for ages, and I’ve finally got around to putting it in place. It’s a series called One for you and one for me, and it’s fairly self-explanatory: I review something (one for me), and then have (at least) one for you, too. Is it essentially a giveaway? Yes, I suppose, but better. I’ll be featuring full-sized products with the help of some sponsors, but I’ll also have selections of minis to try too – because everything is better in miniature.

Continue reading for the very first OFYAOFM!

The debut OFYAOFM comes to you care of Avon, that long-standing cosmetics-by-catalogue institution. I have fond memories of poring over Avon catalogues at Grandma’s, budgeting for hypothetical purchases and filling out the forms at the back. Filling out forms was one of my favourite things to do. I even had a fake credit card number I had made up and memorised. It was 0452 8568 1065 4608… I don’t believe I can still remember it now.

The Avon Mega Effects mascara is quite unlike any mascara I have used before. It doesn’t have a wand in the traditional sense. I’m sitting here trying to think of a comparison. It’s like a broom instead of a static duster? A shuffle-board paddle instead of a hockey stick?

The applicator has a hinge on the handle so you can adjust the angle. It’s wedged into a seal in the top of the mascara part, to stop it drying out. It has a plastic head with shortish bristles, similar to the Covergirl mascaras, rather than a conventional brush. It is curved slightly, which is nice in theory but means you may run into the same problem as with eyelash curlers – your eye needs to be curved in a similar shape, or else you end up bumping the ends of the brush all over the skin around your eyes. It does take a bit of getting used to, but is functional once you get the hang of it.

I didn’t notice this mascara giving any particularly special lengthening or volumising qualities, but it’s a completely passable everyday mascara. Mascara is one of those things that’s hugely variable person-to-person, so I’d be really interested to see how other people find it.

Luckily, I have two of these to give away! Each OFYAOFM post will have a different method of entering, and today’s is super easy: just leave a comment. Tell me your favourite mascara. Tell me your least favourite mascara. Tell me something else entirely… I don’t mind, just leave a comment! I’ll pick two people at random in a couple of weeks.

    Awesome new idea Morgan!
My favourite Mascara at the moment is Clinique’s High Impact – mainly because it’s the only one I have on the go at the moment and it comes off when I need it too. I used to like Benefit’s They’re Real but it really didn’t agree with my eyes and was such a mission to take off.

  • Maddy de Young

This looks super weird but awesome. I don’t talk about my favourite mascara. But hey Morgan, guess what – university aged people were in primary when bebo was a thing. Does that make you feel weird? It makes me feel weird.

I love this comment. Wonder if it’s still around. Probably but not as popular or might have even died. I know Myspace is still around, still get emails from them and actually have people (very few) still adding me..

      • Maddy de Young

Bebo got bought and closed and then the original owners bought it back and want to rejuvenate it…. watch this space. Myspace got really cool! But noone was on it so it didn’t matter 🙁

    • That’s so weird! And MySpace… it’s weird to think there are young adults that I could make MySpace references to and they wouldn’t get it.

    • Amber Holyoake

OMG BEBO! Sorry just nearly died from flashback glee, I’m going to go check if I still have my bebo account!

Ahh mascara. One of the few beauty items (not including face cleansers) that I actually know something about. I’ve tried a few over the years. Different colors (including blue and purple in my middle school days), different lengthening effects, different brands. Eventually I settled on a dark brown (I think it’s called espresso) from Cover Girl. For me is was more about subtle details than drawing attention to how long or dark my eyelashes were.
Question though. I can’t help but recall everyone saying (probably around 2002) that putting mascara on the lower lashes was a cardinal sin of womanhood. Is that true? Was it true? Does it still apply?

    • I was talking about the lower lash thing with an artist at MAC the other day, and how weird it is! I remember reading that advice in teen magazines but haven’t seen it surface for at least five years. I put mascara on my bottom lashes every day. I think the whole ~Kylie Jenner~ trend is making people coat their bottom lashes with mascara even more lately!

  • Such a great idea Morgan! My current favourite mascara is Benefit Badgal Lash but it changes all the time!

    • Artemis

You have excellent taste 🙂 I bought this off StrawberryNet and fell in love with it, it was the first mascara I ever really liked.

  • Paggy S

How the heck do you apply this onto your lashes?? The brush looks so scary haha my favourite mascara atm is the lancome hypnoses!

  • Ellie S

This looks insane. My favourite mascara is probably Benefit They’re Real! which I thought was overrated until I actually tried it! I just wish it was like $2, waterproof, and easy to remove, and then it would be perfect…

  • Charli Marie

This looks really interesting! I don’t think I’ve found my favourite mascara yet to be honest. I’m a huge fan of Maybelline the Falsies, but lately I’ve been trying out the Covergirl clump crusher and honestly don’t see a huge difference between the two… Every time my mascara runs out I buy something different really!

    • Charli, you’re one of my winners! I’ll send you an email x

      • Charli Marie

OMG amazing! Thanks Morgan, I never win things!

  • I almost want this just for the weirdness of it! My favourite mascara right now is Makeup For Ever’s Smokey Extravagant mascara.

  • Artemis

I think GreatLash is the most over-rated mascara ever!

My favourites are: MAC Opulash, Australis MegaLash, L’oreal Million Lashes (the Golden-Black one) and Benefit Bad Girl Lash…I love my lashes to be big, black and bold. 🙂

  • kat

Whoa this is the first time i saw a mascara like that, i guess i have to try. Ive been using maybelline quite lately, all good

  • Jessica Harris

I love all mascara but i havent come across one quite like this one. Its brilliant would love to try. 🙂

    • Jessica you’re a winner! I’ve sent you a message on Facebook xx

      • Jessica Harris

Yah! I fb you back. Thank you so much <3

  • Steph Hicks

I have love/hate relationships with so many mascaras! I love/hate Maybelline Falsies, I love/hate Covergirl Lash Blast…oh and I HATE full stop Jordana Best Lash Extreme – too wet! Xo

  • Amber Holyoake

I’m loving my Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Colour Mascara but the name is misleading, it’s just black. Weird.

    • Well, I suppose black is a beautiful colour… lol
