FOTD | The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid

The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid FOTD

The three clashing shades of pink in this look made me reconsider posting it, but it’s good to share the things that don’t quite work out as well as your makeup victories, so here we are. I don’t quite know what I was going for, but ended up with a metallic pink eye based around MAC Cranberry eyeshadow, paired with a wonky-liplined Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid* in Goa Magnolia, and a heavy 80s application of blush. And, of course, now that I’ve kind of figured out how to put false lashes on myself, I’m doing it every time I wear makeup.

FACE | Sigma Fall 2015 collection

On a particularly bad day last month I arrived home to find a box containing the Sigma Fall 2015 collection on my doorstep (short of the lipsticks, which I haven’t swatched yet, sorry ’bout it). I’ve never used Sigma makeup before – or their brushes, really, aside from feeling them when I visited the Beauty Bliss pop-up store and then immediately coveting them. I know people are hesitant to buy makeup from brands that are primarily sold online, because the experience of seeing the product in person is so important to making the decision to buy. With that in mind, here is a swatch-heavy post with thorough reviews of each product, so hopefully you can make an informed decision. I’m no Temptalia, but this was fun to put together, so whatever. The range launches properly in a couple of days!

LIPS | Lipsticks you can find quickly in your bag, goddamn it

lipstick-you-can-find-in-your-handbag-s

Last time I properly checked I had eleven lipsticks loose in the bottom of my bag, and I suspect I’m not the only person who does this. I want to be able to have a quick rummage to find my lipstick for a top-up, so bags-within-bags don’t make a lot of sense to me; or, they do when I’m trying to be tidy and organised, but they don’t function so well in real life. What this means is that I spend a lot of time groping around for a lipstick, finding a tube, then pulling it out and uncapping it or scrutinising the little sticker on the bottom to see if it’s the one I want. I think you can see where I’m going with this.

Lipstick tubes that are the same colour on the outside as the product on the inside are both enchantingly cute and mind-blowingly simple. Need your dark red lipstick? It’s the dark red one! Genius.

LIPS | On MAC x Toledo and PR samples

Hyacinth-Girl-MAC-Toledo-s

If you read any beauty blogs at all, you’ll know the MAC x Toledo collection is a) extant, b) beautiful and c) now available on counters in New Zealand. I am not publishing this post to be the first to break the news, although of course I’m including arm and lip swatches of the three products I have from the collection. What I really want to talk about is PR samples – PR samples from MAC in particular.

FACE | Ballerina bun & Heroine FOTD

Hyacinth-Girl-sock-bun-s

Purple lipstick is my jam. I crowned MAC Heroine as my favourite when I was interviewed for FishHead Magazine, and I think it still holds true. So rarely are purple lipsticks a) actually purple, rather than simply a purple-toned pink, and b) somehow still acceptable enough for you to wear them all day without everyone commenting on your lipstick. Don’t get me wrong, I like when people comment on my lipstick, but sometimes it’s more of an ‘oh, your lipstick is …interesting, rather than a genuine ‘I really like your lipstick’. (I’ve swatched some of my other favourite purple lipsticks further down this post.)

Second note: My hair is finally long enough to do a ballerina bun! I figured I should try the bun donut I bought, seeing as how it didn’t get used in my xoVain hair tutorial.

FACE | Milani Bella Eyes eyeshadow FOTD

I liked this photo so much that I made it my sidebar profile photo, even though my hand looks weird as hell. Callum says it makes my eyes look swollen, and maybe it does, but if you look close enough you’ll see that’s metallic copper eyeshadow underneath my eyes, and definitely not swelling. This look was mostly to test out the Milani Bella Eyes gel powder eyeshadows – I’ve got Bella Copper and Bella Espresso. I’ve paired it with a couple of new lipsticks, as well as finding that Bella Copper is a dupe for an old MAC favourite.

FACE | I treated myself with a Charlotte Tilbury haul

Oh god, more new makeup? I’ve got a confession to make… I made a few last minute purchases in December before starting my 2015 no-buy. This one I’m justifying as a congratulatory treat I bought myself with my first payment from xoVain. I’ve been back-and-forthing about the price of her products for a while, but this seemed like the perfect time for indulging in a Charlotte Tilbury haul.

This is an image-heavy post, because these products are very pretty. And I have a new camera. I couldn’t help it.

LIPS | Maybelline Color Drama lip pencils

Hyacinth_Girl_Maybelline_Color_Drama_New_Zealand_S

The Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet lip pencils are finally out in New Zealand and I’m fucking stoked. These have been all over UK blogs for months and are touted as the second coming of lip pencils (the first being NARS lip pencils, of course) so I was pretty happy to get these in the mail. They were a PR sample, so they don’t violate my no-buy, if you’re wondering. They’re also mega affordable and dope as hell, so you should check them out if you get the chance. Lip swatches and attempted NARS dupes ahead!
