Purple lipstick is my jam. I crowned MAC Heroine as my favourite when I was interviewed for FishHead Magazine, and I think it still holds true. So rarely are purple lipsticks a) actually purple, rather than simply a purple-toned pink, and b) somehow still acceptable enough for you to wear them all day without everyone commenting on your lipstick. Don’t get me wrong, I like when people comment on my lipstick, but sometimes it’s more of an ‘oh, your lipstick is …interesting‘, rather than a genuine ‘I really like your lipstick’. (I’ve swatched some of my other favourite purple lipsticks further down this post.)
Here’s what’s on my face. I mean, the lash curler isn’t on my face, but I used it, and it’s pretty essential here. I wrote that I wasn’t loving the L’Oreal Miss Manga mascara a while back, and while it still isn’t my favourite, I find it is completely acceptable if I use it after curling the shit out of my lashes.
I’m using the MAC Prolongwear Paint Pot in Constructivist all over my lids, which I’ve been doing a lot lately for convenience’s sake. I guess the Maybelline Bad To The Bronze Colour Tattoo is cheaper and pretty similar if you want to save yourself some money.
My foundation is a new one: The Body Shop’s Moisture Foundation*. It has SPF 15 and, although it is meant to be a low to medium coverage, I find it does an incredible job of covering my redness and blemishes without looking heavy. It’s incredibly thin in formulation. I like it a lot. I’ll be writing a full review of it soon, but in the meantime, A+.
So like I said, in this post I’m wearing MAC lipstick in Heroine, but here are a couple of other dope purple lipsticks in my collection. I know that Heroine can be quite hard to find and also costs $40 here in New Zealand, so I thought I might be useful and share some more budget alternatives. These aren’t perfect dupes for MAC Heroine, but are definitely in the same colour family.
The first is the Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm in Shameless. These are $23 in New Zealand, but there’s almost always a deal on at Farmers. This is very matte, like Heroine, although it doesn’t wear for as long. It’s the only one of these three that doesn’t stain, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your preference. It is very purple, but I’d say it’s like a cross between Heroine and Rebel from MAC.
The second is the Australis Velour Lips in TOK-I-O. It’s even cheaper than Shameless at $15, and it is very long wearing. It’s one of those liquid lipsticks that dries in a heavy matte coat over the lips, so it’s probably not one you want to be wearing if you’re planning on eating a whole bunch. It is cheap, though, and functional enough, which is dope. I’ve tried a few other shades in the Velour Lips range and I have a new one I’m yet to really try out and write about.
The ballerina bun is still a work in progress for me, especially as I have a lot of shorter pieces of hair that definitely weren’t going to stay in the bun unless I doused my head in several coats of hairspray, which is not a thing I like doing. I kinda like the piece-y, messy look, though? I also think having all my hair up in the bun gives my fringe a chance to be a fringe without looking entirely terrible.
What is your favourite purple lipstick?
