If you’ve dedicated December to festive topics, there’s nothing like the week after Christmas to render your past month of content entirely irrelevant. I’ve been skimming through my blog reader and Youtube subscriptions but let me tell you, the last thing I want to hear about is Christmas wishlists and DIYs. This is good in a way, because I’ve been reading a lot of Real Books instead.
I can’t let 2014 pass by without a 2014 makeup favourites post, however, so here it is. I’ll follow this up with my 2014 skincare favourites before the year is out. (Side note: everything on my 2013 makeup favourites list belongs here too, but I didn’t want to repeat myself.)
MAC eyeshadow palette
I got this for Christmas last year and it has been well loved over the past year. There are a few duds in here, pigmentation-wise (I’m looking at you, Rule and Red Brick), but largely it’s really fucking good. I’ve got matte browns for eyebrows and probably too many matte lid shades. There was a period of a few months where all I used was a generous application of Soft Brown all over my eyelids – in fact, MAC Soft Brown is my eyeshadow of the year. Amber Lights and All That Glitters are also good ones. Oh, and there was the couple of months where I lent it to Bronwyn so she could decide which shades she wanted to buy (and I don’t think she even ended up buying any).
Bite Beauty High Pigment Lip Pencil in Rhubarb
If Soft Brown is my eyeshadow of the year, this is my lip product of the year. It’s my true MLBB colour and it applies really well. I now have two of these, so that if I lose one, I won’t be stuck with that uneasy feeling of disappointment in my stomach every time I remember that it’s gone. (This happens when I think about my Revlon Matte Balm in Sultry, which I am pretty sure I’ve lost.)
Clinique High Impact waterproof mascara
Blah, blah, blah mascara of the year. The link takes you to my full review of it, which will also show you that I’ve had it since February so I REALLY need to replace it. It’s just so good, though. People often comment on my eyelashes when I really pack it on, and it packs on without clumping, too. Waterproof mascara forever.
Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting pencil
Did you think Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade was going to be my brow product of the year? Ha! It isn’t. I bought the Hourglass pencil at full New Zealand price ($52!) when I was feeling bummed out about something, and it’s really good and way faster to use than Dipbrow. I do still really like Dipbrow though! You can see the Arch Brow pencil on my face here.
Real Techniques Duo Fibre contour brush
Forgive the grubby one in the photo. It just shows I use it regularly, right? This brush’s primary purpose isn’t for applying base makeup but lately I have been loving it for foundation and BB cream. It’s especially good for working lighter-coverage, runnier products into the skin, like the Diorskin Nude BB cream (on my face in this post).
So that’s it for my 2014 makeup favourites! I could go on and on, but I thought I’d keep it succinct. Skincare favourites will be up in the next couple of days.
Have you tried any of these products? What were your top makeup products of 2014?
