LIFE | Three nice paper goods stores in Wellington

hyacinth_girl_paper_goods_sm

Hyacinth Girl is a beauty blog, but like all bloggers I’m a sucker for a good notebook. The other weekend my Mum needed to buy some gifts so we spent an afternoon on Cuba Street, shopping for cute things. Here are my three favourite stores for nice paper goods in Wellington!

Matchbox Studios

This is a teeny store with a gallery space down the back, packed to the brim with cute things. It’s my go-to for gifts because there’s nothing too expensive and they’re generally from New Zealand artists and creators – the squirrel and acorn planner above is from Matchbox and was a very reasonable $14. It’s at 166 Cuba Street which is very close to my favourite cafe in Wellington (Olive).

Minerva

Minerva is on upper Cuba Street, and has mostly textile-related things like embroidery thread and sewing books, but they also have the best selection of cards in Wellington. There have been situations where I’d rather not give someone a birthday card at all, rather than giving them a crap card from the supermarket, but now I know Minerva is the place to head. They were also selling these Vogue cover postcards for a dollar each, so I grabbed a few.

The French Art Shop

The French Art Shop is on Ghuznee Street but it’s super close to Cuba Street (it’s over the road from Glover Park). It’s not hard to spend an hour in here, poring over everything on offer. They have all the luxurious things I coveted when I was an art-making teenager, like wooden boxes of Derwent watercolour pencils and chalk pastels in shades of sepia. They also have an awesome selection of pens and notebooks at very reasonable prices.

Have you visited any of these places? Am I missing anywhere else lovely? Where do you like to shop for paper goods in your city?

Oh my god I lived in Wellington for like 20 years and I have only heard of the French Art Store clearly I am doing things wrong.

  • I love the French Art Shop! It’s so cute! I often find that Gordon Harris can sometimes be cheaper. Good thing they’re so close together so I can pop into both stores before deciding where to purchase from.

    • Interesting – I’ve found the French Art Shop to be cheaper for most things!

  • I love the French Art Shop too (and Gordon Harris!), I spent a lot of money there while I was doing my architecture degree.

I love Matchbox Studios! Charli and I struggled to not buy everything in there when I was down last time. Minerva has some great gifts for people too+an awesome magazine selection. I really like Iko Iko and also Madame Fancy Pants for paper goods. The latter has a select range but it’s still beautiful nonetheless.

This makes me want to fly down to Wellington right now. Paper shops are my dream shop (other than tea shops). WIsh I had visited these last time I was there!

Don’t forget Iko Iko, Eyeball Kicks and Japan City! They all have cool stationary at times too.
