LIPS | the lipstick tag

Today I am going to give you an insight into how excessively large my lipstick collection is, by way of the lipstick tag. Elese tagged us to do this post and although I am not usually a ‘tag’ kind of person, I was bored the other night and figured it might be fun. I got to look at all my lipsticks together, realised quite how many I have, and rediscovered some old favourites.

1. How many lipsticks do you own?
I have 72. Seventy two. This is not counting lip glosses or balms (because they are not lipsticks, obviously). Actually after taking these photos I realised I couldn’t find my NARS Timanfaya satin lip pencil anywhere, so I’m in a kind of limbo between 72 and 73.

2. What was the first lipstick you owned?
About five years ago when I lived in Toronto there was a drugstore near my house that I spent a lot of time at. It was there I bought my first proper lipsticks, a bright red and deep burgundy. No messing around with boring nudes for me! They were Rimmel’s Bordeaux and Red Hot.

3. What is your favourite lipstick brand?
This was a tricky one but for formula and colour selection, my favourites are Urban Decay, NARS and Tarte. (MAC would be in here if their formula wasn’t somehow disagreeable with my lips.)

4. Most worn?
I went for the ‘most worn overall’ one here, rather than ‘most worn recently’. It’s Revlon’s Matte lipstick in Strawberry Suede, which is the one lipstick I am closest to using up all the way. I don’t wear it a lot anymore, but it’s a nice understated red that looks boss as fuck with a breton tee.

5. What is your favourite finish?
You can tell right away from my collection that my favourite finish is matte. Cheap matte formulas can be hard to wear, but it’s generally low maintenance. I don’t really have time to fuss with lipgloss on top of lipstick, especially at work where I don’t even have pockets most days.

6. Newest lipsticks in your collection?
(I have bought more since drafting this post but let’s disregard that.) Three Blush Baby lipsticks, in Vixen, Royalty and Vamp, and a Bite Beauty High Pigment pencil in Rhubarb. The Bite colour is one I might have overlooked if I was shopping for myself, but a friend gave it to me and I may have a new MLBB shade. It’s rich, creamy, long-wearing and a gorgeous colour. The packaging is really luxe too, like the NARS pencils but even better – the end showing the colour is metal rather than plastic.

7. How many lip products do you currently have in your bag?
There are four in there at the moment, although there can be up to eight or nine. At the moment it’s MAC Morange, Tarte Glamazon lipstick in Fierce, Maybelline Windsor Rose (an old one, probably long discontinued, but a goodie) and Urban Decay’s Revolution lipstick in Protest. Protest is the first lipstick I’ve owned to become a literal every day shade.

8. What is your favourite red?
Hard question, I have so many! I’m a fan of a good fire engine red, but at the moment my favourite is the Hourglass Opaque Rouge liquid lipstick in Icon. I have two minis of this, but I’m steeling myself for when they run out and I have to purchase the full size. These things are the real deal – like everything a drugstore matte liquid lipstick wants to be. So long-wearing!

9. How do you store your lipsticks?
In my MUJI drawers! I don’t usually have ALL of them in the five-drawer setup like I have done here, but it looks awesome so I think I will keep it this way. They don’t actually quite fit… any reasonable person would take that as a sign to reduce the size of their lipstick collection. Instead, I’m considering expanding my MUJI storage. Don’t let me do it!

10. What lipstick are you currently lusting after?
More Hourglass shades, and Urban Decay Revolution lipsticks! Unfortunately the Hourglass ones are mega bucks and Urban Decay isn’t sold in any physical stores in New Zealand, so I’m a little hesitant to buy more online without trying shades out. Have you tried either of these? If you’ve got colour recommendations, please let me know!

  • I’m so glad you did this tag! I’m outrageously jelly of your collection. Need some of those Tarte and Urban Decay lipsticks in my life. I think the Hourglass site ships internationally too if that helps, I’m going to pick up some of those ambient lighting products at some point from there! x

This is a great tag, and I loved all your answers. Number 7 is a classic! I collect both lipstick and muesli bars in my bag.

    • Thanks Christine! I’m the same haha for about five months I had a bag of craisins in my bag that I told myself I was keeping for emergencies. I don’t even like craisins!

  • They look sooooo good in those muji drawers. I need some of my own.

    • They were expensive to get but soo useful for keeping everything organised. Worth the splurge!

  • Yes keep them in the storage, they look amazing! You have such a good collection, I need to get those Urban Decay Revolution lipsticks, I’ve been lusting after them for so long..

  • Wow your collection is amazing

  • Spooky

Wow that is a lot of lipstick! 🙂

I received my Cherry Culture order today, btw. I guess that’s what I get for diverting my mail via California. I actually forgot I’d ordered this stuff, so it was a bit like Christmas. I haven’t swatched anything just yet, but will tomorrow.

    • Oh wow, that took a really long time to get to you! I hope everything is good/what you wanted!

  • Georgia-Lee

72? That is a seriously decent collection! I just have to point out how good those Muji drawers look. I really want some but can’t justify the price seeings as they are just..well plastic containers ;'( I’m flipping back and forth between your separate post on them as I write this and dang, they are actually so good looking. Also; you lived in Toronto?? So awesome!

    • I think stores like Briscoes are starting to stock some acrylic storage, so hopefully they catch on soon and carry something similar to MUJI drawers but hopefully cheaper!

Yeah I lived in Toronto for about a year and a half after I finished school… I miss it a lot but it’s so expensive to get over there that I can’t justify a trip back at the moment :/

We need to hear more about Toronto, when you have the time/inclination. That must have been amazing! 🙂

So far I have tried 4 of the 13 items I bought from CC. I bought a couple of the Infinite Shadow Sticks (one in black and one in white), and used the white one today. For some reason I was expecting it to be creamier, but I found that it kind of drags across my lid, which I didn’t like very much (trying to avoid wrinkles here!). I also used the LA Colors Mineral Eyeshadow Due in “High Tide” which applied beautifully and the colours look great on me, so that’s cool. Finally, I’ve tried the two NYX Round Lipsticks that I bought in Medusa and Pandora. Colour-wise, they are both great, I guess I’m just surprised at how soft and creamy they are. Medusa wants to come straight off my mouth! It would never pass Robyn’s “four hours and a meal” test, that’s for sure. But that’s a minor gripe, I think. Again, they look great on. I just have to be vigilant about re-applying at regular intervals.

        • It’s such a long time ago and was really a different chapter in my life, it’s kinda hard to revisit it now! I guess when I was living in Toronto was when I first got into makeup, though, so I could come at it from that angle. It was truly a beautiful city and I would go back in a heartbeat if it was more affordable to get there!

That’s a bummer about the Infinite Shadow Sticks! Could you try warming it up on the back of your hand and applying from there with your fingertip or a brush? That might avoid the pulling problem!

Those NYX Round Lipsticks are so cheap that I actually like how creamy they are. They apply much more easily than other cheap lipsticks. I’ve heard people refer to them as the type of lipstick you’d take with you on a night out, because they’re super easy to reapply and you won’t be too heartbroken if you lose one. And maybe the reapplying is a good thing if you need excuses for girls’ trips to the bathroom?
