Today I am going to give you an insight into how excessively large my lipstick collection is, by way of the lipstick tag. Elese tagged us to do this post and although I am not usually a ‘tag’ kind of person, I was bored the other night and figured it might be fun. I got to look at all my lipsticks together, realised quite how many I have, and rediscovered some old favourites.
1. How many lipsticks do you own?
I have 72. Seventy two. This is not counting lip glosses or balms (because they are not lipsticks, obviously). Actually after taking these photos I realised I couldn’t find my NARS Timanfaya satin lip pencil anywhere, so I’m in a kind of limbo between 72 and 73.
2. What was the first lipstick you owned?
About five years ago when I lived in Toronto there was a drugstore near my house that I spent a lot of time at. It was there I bought my first proper lipsticks, a bright red and deep burgundy. No messing around with boring nudes for me! They were Rimmel’s Bordeaux and Red Hot.
3. What is your favourite lipstick brand?
This was a tricky one but for formula and colour selection, my favourites are Urban Decay, NARS and Tarte. (MAC would be in here if their formula wasn’t somehow disagreeable with my lips.)
4. Most worn?
I went for the ‘most worn overall’ one here, rather than ‘most worn recently’. It’s Revlon’s Matte lipstick in Strawberry Suede, which is the one lipstick I am closest to using up all the way. I don’t wear it a lot anymore, but it’s a nice understated red that looks boss as fuck with a breton tee.
5. What is your favourite finish?
You can tell right away from my collection that my favourite finish is matte. Cheap matte formulas can be hard to wear, but it’s generally low maintenance. I don’t really have time to fuss with lipgloss on top of lipstick, especially at work where I don’t even have pockets most days.
6. Newest lipsticks in your collection?
(I have bought more since drafting this post but let’s disregard that.) Three Blush Baby lipsticks, in Vixen, Royalty and Vamp, and a Bite Beauty High Pigment pencil in Rhubarb. The Bite colour is one I might have overlooked if I was shopping for myself, but a friend gave it to me and I may have a new MLBB shade. It’s rich, creamy, long-wearing and a gorgeous colour. The packaging is really luxe too, like the NARS pencils but even better – the end showing the colour is metal rather than plastic.
7. How many lip products do you currently have in your bag?
There are four in there at the moment, although there can be up to eight or nine. At the moment it’s MAC Morange, Tarte Glamazon lipstick in Fierce, Maybelline Windsor Rose (an old one, probably long discontinued, but a goodie) and Urban Decay’s Revolution lipstick in Protest. Protest is the first lipstick I’ve owned to become a literal every day shade.
8. What is your favourite red?
Hard question, I have so many! I’m a fan of a good fire engine red, but at the moment my favourite is the Hourglass Opaque Rouge liquid lipstick in Icon. I have two minis of this, but I’m steeling myself for when they run out and I have to purchase the full size. These things are the real deal – like everything a drugstore matte liquid lipstick wants to be. So long-wearing!
9. How do you store your lipsticks?
In my MUJI drawers! I don’t usually have ALL of them in the five-drawer setup like I have done here, but it looks awesome so I think I will keep it this way. They don’t actually quite fit… any reasonable person would take that as a sign to reduce the size of their lipstick collection. Instead, I’m considering expanding my MUJI storage. Don’t let me do it!
10. What lipstick are you currently lusting after?
More Hourglass shades, and Urban Decay Revolution lipsticks! Unfortunately the Hourglass ones are mega bucks and Urban Decay isn’t sold in any physical stores in New Zealand, so I’m a little hesitant to buy more online without trying shades out. Have you tried either of these? If you’ve got colour recommendations, please let me know!
