It’s a couple of days late but here are my 2013 favourites!
Real Techniques Buffing Brush – I’ve tried out a few different methods of foundation application, but I’ll always come back to this brush. It comes in the Real Techniques Core Collection, which is worth it for this brush and the contour brush alone. I bought a second set a few months ago, just so I could have another of these brushes! The bristles are dense and incredibly soft. It gives a really even finish really quickly. I haven’t used more expensive equivalents like the Sigma F80 or xoBeauty brushes, but that’s mostly because this brush is so good I haven’t felt like I needed to buy them.
Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick – The one pictured is Bold, a coral colour, but I have six of these and they are definitely my favourite lipsticks. The colour selection is really good, the pigmentation is good and the formula is really creamy. I wouldn’t say they stay on for 12 hours, but they definitely last a good 4 or 5 without needing a touch-up. These are a bit hard to get, because they’re not sold in New Zealand, but worth the extra effort to find.
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer – This has probably been the most photographed product on this blog, as I use it literally every day and in every look I do. This concealer is worth the extra cash dollars as it gives the perfect balance of coverage and creaminess (hence the name), so I use it for both spot-covering and under the eyes. It doesn’t crease and it lasts all day. Excellent. I use the shade Vanilla, but they have a really good selection in both warm and cool shades, like all NARS products.
Urban Decay Naked Basics eyeshadow palette – I don’t use this palette as often as I used to, especially now that I have more eyeshadows to choose from, but this was my staple eyeshadow source for most of the year so it makes the cut for this list. It’s a very cool-toned palette, with all shades matte but one. Nothing exciting, but you can do a selection of complete looks just using this, and the shadows are really pigmented and nice to use. I’d definitely recommend this as a basic for everyone to have! Plus you can get them on Beauty Bay for a decent price with free worldwide shipping.
NARS Sheer Glow foundation – This is my holy grail foundation, and I use it every day. Towards the end of 2013 I thought maybe I should branch out and try some others (more on that soon), but I always come back to this. It’s neither sheer nor particularly glowy – it provides good coverage over both pimples and redness, and although it doesn’t have a dewy finish, it’s definitely not matte. Again, a huge selection of shades in both warm and cool undertones, which is awesome for everyone. You can get this at Mecca Cosmetica in New Zealand, which I would recommend because being matched to foundation is always a good idea.
Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray – I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this on Hyacinth Girl yet, but this is another product I use every day without fail. While I will set my foundation with powder if I want fuller coverage or if I’m going to have a really long day, I’ll always finish off with this spray. It stops your skin looking powdery and prolongs the staying power of all your makeup. It’s a bit pricey but much better than the cheaper alternatives on the market – I used the Australis one and found that it was not much more than scented water.
