Wishlist: brush sets

It’s October, but the makeup retail world is pushing Christmas (or the more vague ‘Holiday’) gift sets already. I’ve had my eye on a few of these for a while. Here’s the top five brush sets on my wishlist (although there’s no way I’m going to be buying all five of them!)

1. MAC Stroke of Midnight Brush Kit: Essentials, $49.50 USD
As soon as I saw this I knew I had to get it. It has the ubiquitous 217 blending brush, which is a definite must-have, as well as a 239 flat shader brush. These two guys together are pretty much all you’ll ever need for eyeshadow. I have a 217 already but who can say no to more perfect brushes? Plus it will mean I can have a clean one on hand. I don’t know if that flat foundation brush will get any use, but one dud out of five is not bad.

2. Real Techniques Duo Fibre Collection, Limited Edition, £23.99
I’ve been trying to get my hands on this set for a while but iHerb have not made it easy for me, first losing my package and then giving the WORST customer service in the world. I’ll get this set eventually, but in the mean time if you’re interested in picking it up, I’d recommend buying from a reliable retailer like Feel Unique, linked above.

3. Sephora + Pantone Universe 24-Karat Bag and Brush Set, $58 USD
I’ve never tried Sephora brushes and didn’t think they’d be up to much, but I’ve read good things about them lately, and they have a good variety of brush sets on their site. You may be noticing a theme in most of these sets: they have a white-bristled angled blush brush in most of them. This is because I have developed a completely irrational need to own one, and I will obsess over them until I get one.

4. XO Beauty 12pc Beginners Set, $100 NZD
XO Beauty is Shannon Harris‘ brush line. I haven’t had a chance to try them yet but I’ve heard mostly good things. This is her most comprehensive brush set, and I think when you’re getting up to prices like this, you may as well go big or go home… and by ‘go big’ I mostly mean ‘buy more brushes than you’ll ever need’.

5. Sigma Beauty Essential Kit: Make Me Cool, $155 USD
You know what I just said about buying all the brushes? When you’re getting into $150+ territory that’s a bit harder to justify. ALL the girls on Youtube seem to LOVE Sigma brushes, but every time I go to check the Sigma website, imagining that their brushes might be cheaper than they were last time I checked, I just can’t quite justify the price. These ones have blue handles, which is pretty cute I guess. You’ll also see there’s that white-bristled angled blush guy in there again. I think he’s going to be haunting my dreams until I get my hands on one.

What are your favourite brushes? Any must-have kits I’ve missed?

  • Ahhhhh! All of these look lush and I’d kill for any. I’m definitely going to get The RT this christmas as our drugstores have buy one get one half price on a lot of the RT sets. I’m thinking this and the core collection? – If I can spare the pennies after christmas the MAC set is coming home with meeeeeeee! – Great post btw. I should really add some of these to my own wishlist. 😀
